The Trump movement's most telling and distinctive moments – not its most significant, nor most harsh, nor most threatening, nor most foolish, but possibly its most revealing – came earlier this autumn. Over the span of several weeks, the nation's leader began displaying the public his plans for a gilded ballroom double the dimensions of the White House and subsequently started independently demolishing the East Wing to construct it.
He has committed acts 10,000 times as bad – the current estimate of fatalities due to his slashing to USAID is 600,000 and growing, and recently an analysis forecast his energy policies would cause deaths an additional 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No previous president would have risked – genuinely, no former commander would have conceived – unilaterally destroying significant portions of the White House in order to erect a royal-themed celebration hall, with the direct cooperation of some of America's wealthiest, the majority of whom maintain dealings with the government.
We went from 'the gentle will obtain the world' into 'the meek shall die to cholera'
As bewildering as it is to observe the president attempt to overturn the traditional concept about democracy and replace it with its direct contrary, there remains a substantial portion among Americans who should not find it completely novel. That is those of us – in older age cohorts close to half – who were educated as conventional Protestant believers.
We have witnessed throughout the years while conservative evangelical congregations transformed the Christ we grew up with into the complete reverse of our understanding of him. At its most basic, they transformed an image of affection into a symbol of hate who endorses precisely the cruelties that he denounced in scripture; this change developed more gradually, across decades as opposed to months, yet it remains disturbing in the same ways, a disorienting gut punch for countless people.
A Damaging Christianity Gains Ground
Therefore allow me to outline the Jesus that I grew up with, because theoretically the Savior is the core of Christian religion, and since the rapidly expanding group of Americans might have little sense of him as they consider themselves skeptics or doubters or religiously unaffiliated. I have no problem with these various perspectives, nor with any other faith; however I believe that there are pearls of great price in the Christian story.
It is emphatically absolutely not the story of an authoritative monarch emerging; conversely, a baby is born to parents without shelter in a storage space, who must quickly flee to a different country to escape covert authorities. The infant develops in simple surroundings, a laboring woodworker; his message focuses on affection for other people, particularly for the disadvantaged – not simply tender feelings, but tangible care, shown by providing food and sheltering. Jesus' answer to violence is to offer the other cheek – not as a demonstration of submissive tolerance, but as a method to instruct the aggressor; his crime policy states that when someone steals your outer garment you should give him your sweater also.
The apparent and direct truth that Christ from scripture calls for a form of radical love focused on the impoverished is what has always made Christian religion somewhat of a controversial faith: attractive to the populace, but because of its intrinsic extremism needing to be contained. In the 1950s it was contained through watering down – Protestant Christianity was so prevalent that it essentially blessed current circumstances.
A Conflict for the Finest Within Us
Therefore I have felt inspired to witness the determined opposition against Trump emerge over the last twelve months. It has served as substantial consolation to assist in constructing the initiative that has protested openly through repeated demonstrations, and seems to have inspired voters to turn out in large quantities in interim political contests. We must have to persist with it, and with identical determination, with American flags throughout each rally and requests to the highest qualities within national heritage.
We will be questioned ... regarding how you welcomed the stranger? Did you accept these individuals and receive them or refuse?
America is best defended, essentially, by relationship to the finest in US heritage, just as Christianity is optimally secured by reference to that which renders it distinctive and magnificent, specifically the model of the Savior. In neither case does it mean pretending the most damaging about the nation and religious tradition was nonexistent; it means both modesty and conviction, a mixture that genuine US believers ought to accept.
