The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.
The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
