Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements made by skipper Stokes about the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered those words in multiple conversations in the wake of his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes series against Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

However, following Crawley made 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to England suffered a loss in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards took a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before this match, Stokes revealed his team had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from Stokes and coach McCullum had remained consistent with their prior tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this game."

The Hosts Close of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal on day four came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia require four wickets on the final day to move to an unassailable 3-0 advantage with three matches played.

Defeat will extend the English team's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes series loss.

The current battle will be completed in only eleven days of cricket – after England losing the initial matches in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a formidable side. It was inevitably hard coming here against them. They were the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's performance in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his immediate place in the side, Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 in the team's second innings on day four, extending his modest returns versus Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

However, the opener insisted any notion Pope is under the microscope comes from "the media" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is talk externally. There is no discussion of that nature on Ollie in the camp," he concluded.
