Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has secured 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

Australia's chief selector Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the prospects of participating.

"We know that the clock is ticking and various factors involved, not just the physical problem, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a major part. Hopefully starting in Perth. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand last month after scans revealed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with setbacks in multiple past seasons causing him to miss three Australian summers in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the series.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against India as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the initial game as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs in any case. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for another day, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
