2K Games has secured Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to oversee the development team at 31st Union, which is currently crafting the anticipated third-person roguelike extraction-shooter known as Project Ethos.
Leadership Shift Follows Lukewarm Feedback
The new appointee steps into the role of studio head at 31st Union following the dismissal of previous head the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' underwhelming unveiling last fall.
Recently, 2K president David Ismailer informed team members about this strategic move through an internal memo, which emphasized that playtesting had shown the requirement for a distinct game identity.
Ismailer stated that the developers is now overhauling Project Ethos with a renewed vision, aiming to better meet gamer demands.
Trend of Strategic Recruitment
The news mirrors a comparable step taken by the publisher in August, when they brought on Rod Fergusson from Blizzard to contribute to the beloved franchise development group.
Below is the full text from the president's communication:
Dear Team—
I know you all just finished your gathering - I trust you’re as excited as I am with the positive developments. Previously I sent you all a update, I stated the following: “I believe in this team. You all are some of the most driven and creative designers we have had the opportunity to partner with - and we’re eager for that relationship to endure.”
With your dedication and adaptability, especially over the past twelve months, you consistently demonstrate that.
The gamer responses from last autumn’s Project ETHOS playtest was informative. It confirmed the appeal of a roguelike shooter but made clear we still had refinements needed. It revealed the requirement for a more distinct identity.
The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve progressed. You took the feedback to mind and reimagined Project ETHOS with a revitalized direction - one that’s poised to deliver on its promise to our fans.
Our confidence in this project strengthens every day. To advance the incredible advancement you’ve made, I am thrilled to introduce the new hire as the new Director of the team. Following some time of talks, he starts with us on the specified date.
His leadership and experience in the competitive gaming field is extensive, having devoted the past decade and a half creating and managing some of the most popular titles in the industry, including the acclaimed shooter, and lately, the battle royale hit.
Please join me in welcoming him next week. We are all eager to persist observing the evolution of Project ETHOS in the months to follow.
The President

He previously was employed at major gaming companies in various development positions on the Call of Duty series, and, earlier in his career, had stints at other industry leaders.
Game Details and Vision
Project Ethos was announced in last year together with a community playtest. At the time, 31st Union presented the game as a "no-cost, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an exciting evolution on the style."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Customize your character in real-time to suit your personal playstyle," the description states. "Face the rivals with fresh skills, risks, and obstacles that evolve every session. Will you leave securely with your collected items? Or go big, put it on the line, and trust your squad can achieve the highest spot? The option is yours."
The game does not have an confirmed release date or consoles, but players can look forward to further news as development progresses.
